We've all heard about the Day of the Dead or seen the classic sugar skull paintings—but what does this celebration really represent?

In the Hispanic community, Dia de Los Muertos is a day that we dedicate to demonstrate love and respect for deceased family members. The holiday celebrates by also believing that as long as you remember those that have passed they will always live and only die if you forget them. Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration of life and death. While the holiday originated in Mexico, it is celebrated all over Latin America with colorful calaveras (skulls) and calacas (skeletons).

Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) is a two day holiday typically celebrated on October 31st through November 02. This holiday reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (Offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed.

Both my mother and father have passed and so this means that The Day of The Dead is a lot more meaningful to me this year.

My mom and dad loved candy and they loved going to HEB to purchase it, and a lot of it. As we grew up we lived in a rural town in South Texas and so we had to drive about 45 minutes to shop at the nearest HEB. It was so much fun, and happily, it was always the highlight of our weekend. I remember shopping the candy aisles and Hershey chocolate candies were always first in our carts.

In memory of my parents I bought an assortment of Hershey’s chocolates at My Local HEB and put together a Hershey Sugar Skull Candy Tray. The project was so easy to make and so much fun that I made two versions. Plus, sneaking a small treat wasn’t too bad either. In fact it was more than one, these are delicious!

You can leave the candies wrapped to complete the platter but I decided to take off the wrappers to show the quality of the chocolates and it made it ready to eat. Now that’s my type of platter! Below are the instructions on how to recreate your own Hershey Day of The Dead Sugar Skull Candy Tray. All the Hershey candies listed below can be purchased at HEB.
